......the lovely Lindsay from the The Border Tart put out a call for volunteers to knit warm and cosy stuff for the Edinburgh Crisis at Christmas appeal run by the Red Cross to hand out to the homeless at Christmastime. Also, Lindsay would provide the yarn and postage/packing, free of charge in exchange for the knitted items. I chose this lovely 4ply sock yarn in a nice shade of blue and chose this pattern, knitted on just two pins (mainly because I'm hopeless with circular needles) and which would ergo involve sewing up a seam but that didn't bother me too much.
The end result (it looks like one sock is larger than the other but it's just the way I took the pic). I added stripes with a nice green yarn that a friend had given me a while ago. I also donated hats, fingerless mitts, cowls, crocheted blankets and a shawl that I had previously made and that had all been languishing in a drawer waiting on recipients so this was the ideal opportunity to give them away to folks who would be in desperate need for warmth more than ever this pandemic wintertime. The appeal was very well subscribed and by the time 'handover day' arrived, the organisers were delighted with the response.

Lindsay had also organised a 'stitch-a-long' through her Instagram page, using either fabric or kits that had been purchased from her shop or your own fabric and thread. There was no theme, the aim purely being to start the year off with a nice gentle project to take us through to Easter. I remembered that I had bought a sewing project from Lindsay last year sometime and it too had been languishing in a drawer waiting on me getting my act together inspiration so I gathered my supplies and off I went.

Hope the weather's being kind to you, wherever in the world you are.

Stay safe and well.

What a lovely idea to give handknitted items for winter warmth Anne - how special for Lindsay to organise this. I love the socks you have shown - a gorgeous shade of blue. Your Mandala cushion cover is looking great & Yes I love simple projects to work on in the evenings in front of the tele when my eyes are a bit tired. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie. Your weather looks so appealing right now!xx
DeleteWhat a lovely idea the knitting for warmth project was, really worthwhile and your friend Lindsay must have had to go to some lengths to get that coordinated. Your mandala is interesting, I wouldn't be able to sit still long enough to complete something like that!
ReplyDeleteThanks Betty. Lindsay was in Jaipur last January. She buys things from a women's co-operative there and makes up kits to sell in her shop but I don't think my piece of material is from India. Next were selling similar wallpaper! Also, a Red Cross Co-ordinator organises everything and then asked Lindsay to provide the material and give a shout out for volunteers. I'm a dab hand at sitting still these days, I could give lessons on it!!xxx
DeleteIt warms my heart to know that some poor homeless people have some lovely hand knitted socks to keep them warm. You are kind.
ReplyDeletethat embroidery is gorgeous, I can see that adorning the hem of my brown pinafore dress!
I love Lindsay's kit so much, I wonder if a complete novice like me would be able to follow it?
Stay safe & cosy. xxx
Thanks Vix. Lindsay has some lovely Indian fabrics in her kits (I'm not affiliated in any way, btw,I just like 'enabling' people! The only pattern you have to follow is in the fabric, she doesn't issue instructions. If you can sew fabulous stuff like patchwork curtains, you can do embroidery. Some of the stitches are really easy and there's tons of YouTube tutes to guide you if you get stuck. I just know two or three stitches and so that's what I'm using for my cushion cover.Go on, give it a go.xx
DeleteKind, thoughtful and talented...that is you. x
ReplyDeleteThanks Libs. Hope you're keeping safe and well.xxx
