Life is a rollercoaster.....

The other day, I bumped into an acquaintance that I hadn't seen for a while and they asked me if I'd been away anywhere on holiday this year. I quickly replied 'no, I haven't had the time'! She said 'but I thought you were retired now?' I said I was but that didn't mean I have all the time in the world to do with as I please! The tendency is for other folks to assume that your time needs to be 'policed' just in case you were to fall into the trap of enjoying yourself too much. Add into the mix, a geriatric mother, two chronically ill sisters and a whole heap of grandchildren (well 3 actually but that's a heap to me*) and one wonders where one had the time to ever go to work! Anyhow, this is how I've been passing my 'free' time this summer and dare I say, enjoying myself while I was at it!

The Big Blue Top rolled into a town near me to host the little spin-off festival of the Edinburgh Fringe and I was particularly good to myself this year, having booked a couple of tickets to go and spend...

Mr. Adam Frost, he of Gardener's World fame and winner of many gold  medals at Chelsea Flower Show. He gave a very interesting talk and answered many questions with a great deal of humour and I particularly loved the fact that his first subjects on the agenda were his two grandmothers, one who he called 'Scruffy Nan' and the other 'Tidy Nan'! It was clear that he held both in very high esteem, especially when it came to spending time away from his abusive father. His introduction to gardening came via his grandfathers' allotments and the rest, as they say......! I came away from the talk floating and feeling a little bit in love with Mr. Frost!

Then two days later, off we go to the Big Blue Top once again, this time to see...

the incomparable Mr. Patrick Grant. I nearly didn't make it on time because of lack of parking slots but luckily the long queue of silver-haired admirers  made sure I had time to spare! When he came on stage, he apologised to the 3 men in the audience in case they had been dragged along against their will! Again, he gave a very interesting talk, mostly promoting his clothing company (all of the gear he was sporting, including the brown woollen socks he was oddly wearing with his Birkenstocks, was made either in Wales or Lancashire, where he moved his company to after the first lockdown).  His clothes are expensive to the ordinary punter but he said it's better to invest £100 on one good pair of jeans which will last for an immeasurable amount of time, knowing exactly where and how they were made, than spend £10 ten times over a year on a few unethically sourced and badly produced pairs. Easy for him to say, I suppose but I've been buying second-hand clothing since the early '70's and still do so I think I've made a healthy contribution to saving our planet and will continue to do so ad infinitum. Patrick (we're on first name terms now!) only mentioned The Sewing Bee momentarily at his Q&A session at the end of the talk. It was quite clear from the beginning that he was NOT there to talk exclusively about the programme!Again, as with Adam, rousing applause at the closing of the talk from their very appreciative audiences. No book signing from Patrick but I was rather bemused by the piles of boxes filled with Adam's new book. His sponsors were obviously optimistic that they'd all sell on the day!

Being the skinflint skint pensioner that I am, I ordered my copy from the library! Sorry Adam!

The weather held fast for the whole 10 days of the festival. It was nice to wander round visiting the various stalls that had opened up shop for the duration and the food and drink traders were doing brisk business. Nice to see folks enjoying the sunshine and good festival vibes although some people got a bit carried away at the Sister Sledge concert two nights later and carried off one of the flags! Don't think it was Patrick who'd mentioned he was attending!
Unfortunately, I didn't manage to bag myself a ticket to see Miss Elkie Brooks a couple of nights later, despite putting my name on the waiting list. Perhaps she'll come and sing for us next year, fingers crossed. The last time I saw her in concert was in Edinburgh in 1977! She came on for her encore and sang the most beautiful Jewish hymn. I've never forgotten about that.

In the quest to become an old and grey hedonist, the fun in the sun continued ......how very dare I ....but that's for next time!
Bye for now and thanks for reading if you got this far! Means a lot.
💕
*I love my grandchildren more than life itself so it's never a chore to see them. In fact, it's a great honour that they want to spend time with me and by the way, I'm definitely 'Scruffy Nana'!

  1. Finally I am able to comment. I've had a dickens of a time commenting on some blogs...yours being one of them. I appreciate you not giving up on me and still stopping by my blog. Great minds think alike as for the retirement post! The festival looked like a fun day for sure and glad you had good weather. I love going to "talks". When I lived up North I would go to the local colleges in the area and they would have some interesting presentations.
Most of the farmers in that book were German or Scandinavian if I remember. I know my relatives who were Irish settled in Northern Illinois in the states as it reminded them of Ireland with the rolling hills.
So glad I can comment on your posts now! My heartfelt gratitude to you for visiting me and commenting. I would have loved to tag along with you to the festival! TTYL!

    1. So glad you were able to leave your lovely comment, Sandra. It's a pleasure to visit your space too. I often think we have parallel lives, despite a very big ocean and a couple of small seas separating us!

  2. Oh what a lovely review. I'm recovering this morning from a family barbecue yesterday - thirteen of us. Including my cousin who has not been to Norfolk for 25 years, and never met half the other guests (my SILs and grandchildren) Those talks sounded great - I think Patrick is a really interesting guy, so much more to him than just sewing bee. And Adam Frost is always fun to listen to on Gardeners World. Enjoy the su 🌞😎❤️👍

  5. Hello...sounds like you had fun and what a wonderful thing to do....I'm impressed by the fact that you book tickets for anything....very good planning there....I usually am far too late to know something is going on and then miss it! I agree about grandchildren...mine have been away on Jura and Islay for the past fortnight and I can't wait for them to come back....xx

    1. Aw thanks Libs and how great to hear from you. Hope all's well. I've never been to the Western Isles but they're on my bucket list if ever I can leave my home apart from doing favours for others! I love the little festival and when the ticket sales are advertised in March, I immediately book whatever takes my fancy but I try not to spend more than £12 per ticket. The Edinburgh Festival can cost up to 3 times that, depending on who you want to go and see plus there's the added stress of getting there and back alone. I don't have that worry at the little seaside venue.

  6. That sounds like an excellent festival! Adam Frost AND Patrick Grant, you are a lucky girl! PG's just started following my artist friend, Liz, on Instagram - she's beyond excited. Was Adam wearing his old man black shoes and shapeless trousers? Me and Jon reckon his wife makes him wear them when he's doing public appearances to stop his fans going all-out groupie on him!
I wonder if that missing flag will turn up on one of next year's Sewing Bee's "Makeover Challenges", make yourself a cool festival outfit out of a nicked flag!
Can't wait for part 2. xxx

    1. Well I must say Adam didn't try too hard in the wardrobe department, jeans and a polo shirt and his old khaki bomber jacket! Mrs. Frost needn't have worried, most of the audience were silver vixens!! Lol PG's brown woollen socks with his Birkies were decidedly off-putting!

  7. Hello Dearie Dear! Look at you, going to have fun and being out with lots of people! I believe you are very busy and giving away your love and care! That's the best, right? Prayers for your mum and your sisters. I know you are concerned. Take care, Lovely! xo

  8. Omg, Elkie Brooks! I nearly burst into tears just reading the name - I loved her songs, had no idea she was still singing in public. Although amazingly, my 73 year old neighbour recently attended an outdoor performance concert by The Who in the grounds of the royal residence at Sandringham - all three things quite incredible!! Nothing should surprise me, really, all these artists are over 80 now. Love your second-hand habit, I am the same. When I retired I gave all my smart clothes to charity shops, and now buy nearly everything from charity shops. I do buy undies and nightwear from Damart, though. It makes me feel so good buying second-hand, I'm helping the planet as well as the charity (and enjoying a browse!)

  9. The Who were recently at Edinburgh Castle performing, same week as Rod Stewart. I didn't attend either concert. Couldn't get a ticket for Elkie and I don't suppose she'll make a return appearance! Mind you, some of her male contemporaries are still spawning children in their dotage so anything's possible!

  10. I enjoyed reading about your holiday adventures- I'd like to hear more about Patrick Grant! He doesn't really get that much chance to tell us much about himself on Sewing Bee!
Thanks for your nice comment- I love that you thought of me when you heard Gamelan!x
