In the Court of a Scottish King......

Saturday turned out to be a gorgeously sunny day after the grey and chilly week that preceded it so my sister and the wee folk in my life took a trip back to the 14th century to visit one of our local castles and the Medieval Village which had literally popped up overnight and whose inhabitants were camping out for the weekend, including a 'royal' visitor.

It was a long climb up the stairs so I let the younger members of the group attempt it while I took the slow route up and over the drawbridge!

The servery where the family silver would be displayed whilst dining in the Great Hall.
I'd like to say that the smell from the 'victuals' department was appetising but I suppose you had to be really hungry to appreciate it!The homemade bread looked nice though.

Bullseye!

Keeping watch for the enemy!

You could almost touch the tops of the trees from the battlements.
I liked the reflection from the skylight (i.e. the hole in the roof!) on to the wall underneath.

This lady (the one in Medieval dress, not the one with the backpack) showed us how to make 'friendship' bracelets using her own hand spun and hand dyed yarn and a round piece of cardboard.

This young girl was being taught woodworking skills by her father and I really admired her enthusiasm and her talent in planeing the piece of wood that she was working on.  Great values being passed on. Not a computer screen in sight!

Great chiselling skills!
The Great Man himself, King Robert the Bruce! (with the aid of 21st technology i.e. a microphone to help him tell his story to the crowd).
Let the battle commence!

It was a great day spent outdoors in the sunshine (not quite tropical weather here yet but apparently it's on its way!) and as castles go, this one was quite cosy indoors, give or take a few holes in the roof.

Hope you all had a good weekend too.
Thanks for stopping by.

ps semi-retirement's going well so far. I just need to structure my week properly and get stuff done but the appeal of the great outdoors holds much more sway than shutting myself in my boxroom and finding stuff that 'spark joy'! That can wait for a rainy day.

    1. Thank you Julie. Yes I'm getting weather reports from your side of the world from my Bestie in Auckland. Such a bonus when the weather is for you, which it's being this week but we mustn't get too comfy, apparently winter is coming back at the weekend!!
