All About Autumnal Orange....

.....seems to be a lot of it about (the colour orange, not the fruit) at the moment to cheer us all up, which is perhaps just as well, given the circumstances into which Autumn 2020 has plonked itself.

I have been admiring some velvet pumpkins which abound t'internet right now, it being nearly Halloween and all but being Scottish and far too mean to part with any money for them, I raided politely sifted through my Mum's fabric stash and found some nice grey velvet stuff which was ideal for the job. I managed to make one for my mantlepiece, although it looks a bit like one of those headpads that you would use if you had a headache but I crocheted some orange leaves and sewed them on to make it look a bit more like the real thing. I crocheted some pumpkins last year for eldest Granddaughter's school fair and managed to find one left in the cupboard to keep the velvet one company.

Monty Don said on Gardeners' World last week that it doesn't matter from which vantage point you view your garden, the whole purpose of having a garden is to admire it from wherever makes you happy so when I open the spare room curtains in the morning, I get to look straight down on to my Japanese Acer which is directly underneath the window and which has surpassed itself this year with a splendid show of greenery during the summer months and now this fantastic array of russet leaves, shimmering in the weak Autumn sunshine.

Autumn is also the season for stodge good, healthy and wholesome meals so this week, I made some Shepherd's Pie to deliver to the family. The topping is orange because I mashed sweet potato alongwith the regular white potatoes, just to add a little extra to the dish.

The other day, I paid a visit to my ex-place-of-work to pick the remainder of the raspberries and some lovely cooking apples. The front drive has been replaced with some orange-hue'd gravel and the lawn has been renewed completely with some lush green turf.  It felt odd being there.

Found an orange rock lying on a bench seat at the seaside but just left it in situ for someone else to find.
My daughter-in-law paid a visit with the baby last week and after lunch, we went for a drive (in separate cars!) to a local seaside town to fill our lungs with some salty sea-air and it was a real treat to be able to walk around (with masks on) and not bump into anyone or go out of our way to avoid people heading towards us in the opposite direction.

We love visiting this lovely Swedish shop in the same town and I couldn't resist taking a pic of the window display which featured a nice little woven bowl and one of those Swedish Candle log thingies.

Last but by no means, least for your delight and delictation, a couple of pics of our 'orange' baby who is growing and thriving and making his Nana's heart burst with pride for him.
He loves his rice cakes!

As a footnote, I just must say that my Chromebook and the new Blogger set-up don't seem to like each other!! It's taken me the best part of the day, on and off, to make this here little post and I can't seem to find a way to delete a pic once it's in the post, other than pressing ctrl/x to get rid of it. Any hints or tips would be appreciated.

Lovely to 'speak' to you and hopefully you're all staying safe and well.
Have a great weekend, y'all.

  1. I love that plump little orange headed baby, how very cuddly :) fun that you are making Halloween decs, our family go big on it as you know - Steve's going to carve me some pumpkins this year and our spooky little black cat will arrive on Sunday. I have no idea what a Swedish log candle is but it looks very interesting. Although life is grim at the mo I am glad you have that beautiful deserted beach to enjoy, I have only been once to Brighton since lockdown began as it's been so crowded I didn't dare. Nice to see a post from you, Betty x

    1. Thanks Betty, he is rather cuddly and extremely kissable!!Those cheeks! The Swedish Log thingie is for the garden apparently. It provides quite a bit of heat once it gets going. The seaside town is where we once lived and where my youngest was born. It's usually packed solid with tourists and 'townies' in the summer months. The winter months are glorious if you manage to get a dry, sunny, crisp day. It's also the nearest place that I can get my washing up liquid and toilet cleaner bottles refilled, though presently, you have to leave them for 72 hours before you can go back and pick them up!

  2. I've never been keen on babies but I'd happily make an exception for your Grandson, he's gorgeous (and he loves rice cakes, too - yum!)
How lovely that you got to spend a day at the seaside with your daughter in law, the weather looks glorious.
The colour of your Japanese Acer is incredible, that must give you such a huge lift every time you lay eyes upon it. Loving your Autumnal mantelpiece, you are clever!
I use a clunky old PC so I'm no help. I have noticed that they still seem to be tweaking New Blogger and sometimes I can't delete photos or add captions and other times I can. xxx

    1. Thanks Vix. I'm lucky to be surrounded by the sea where I live though I prefer to visit the beaches in the winter months when they're not so 'peopley'! (luckily, I know the locations of a few 'secret' beaches in the area too though you generally have to pay to get on to them but I don't mind that so much).

    1. Thanks my gorgeous friend. It felt a bit weird to be there because it invoked memories and some regret that I left due to circumstances beyond my control (though I should have officially retired last year), firstly with being furloughed then secondly with catching the virus and being unable to return to work, so retirement it had to be. Hope you're safe and well.xxx
