Sea of Poppies

My local PTA held a book/toy/uniform exchange swap in the village hall on Friday. By the time I got there, near-closing, I was the only one attending which suited me just fine and dandy as far as safety was concerned and it also allowed me to have a proper browse of the books (toys we don't need, especially after clearing out the midden* toy cupboard under the stairs and donating quite a few things to the swap) at my leisure. I spotted this one which looked interesting and brought it home (I cleaned the cover thoroughly with anti-bac and disinfectant wipes) then later on in the afternoon, when I was driving home from visiting my Ma, I passed the most beautifully harvested field with the 'set aside' area totally dedicated to a 'sea of poppies'. I had to stop and take a couple of pics. How serendipitous was that?!

Another book which I procured was this weighty tome by a rather famous Scottish author and which I had read in my dim and distant past but like all good books, someone had borrowed it from me and it remained unreturned!

The little princesses came for a visit mid-week and since our activities have been seriously curtailed because of most places still being closed (castles and the beach being our locations of choice) and of course the inclement weather didn't help either, we made pizzas, whilst admiring our fake nails (not mine) and colour-co-ordinating said nails with our handbags!

Also on the way home the other day, I was in the traffic queue waiting to turn at the junction behind this Harley Davidson motorbike and was a little bit jealous of the pillion passenger. It's on my bucket list to have a ride on a Harley before my knees give up on me completely! They rode off into the ensuing sunset towards the beach, making me even more envious.

and what beautiful sunsets we've been having lately
then later on, a Harvest Moon appeared in the inky blue night sky.

Have a good week everyone, stay safe and be like 'Kitty' and wear a mask.

*midden : Scottish word meaning a mess (or worse)

  1. I think I certainly would have had to stop & photograph that sea of poppies too dear Anne. I adore poppies - they are one of my faves. I also adore book sales & love to browse them at my leisure. The big one in our little town was cancelled but I see last week they are going to try & hold it in late September. Have a lovely week my friend xx

    1. Thanks Julie, the field is just around the corner from my house but had never noticed it until last week! It was a bit sad to see all the books which were still left over, as well as dvd's and cd's, none of which I needed. I suppose they were inundated with donations since the charity shops are still shut here. Have a good week too, Julie.xxx

    1. I love books too, Lynn but my house is too small to keep everything I'd like so try and pass on my excess books to folks I know will love them just as much as I did (although I draw the line at giving away any of my Barbara Kingsolvers or Roddy Doyle's!)I have a Kindle which my eldest boy gave me a few Xmasses ago but hardly use it. He also gave me his old Kindle Fire and I just use that for going online if my laptop conks out!x

  3. I loved Sea of Poppies, I read it in the pre-monsoon heat of Goa in May 2009 and it brings back many a happy memory! Your own sea of poppies is glorious, what a wonderful sight!
What a lovely time you had with the grandkids despite all the normal options for fun not being an option at the moment.
Nothing as civilised as a book sale here, I'll have to brave the clearance chazza in the next week or so to stock up.
I hope you get your dream of riding on the back of a Harley one day - maybe driven by Monty Don? xxx

  4. Oh thanks for the review,Vix. I'll enjoy it even more now. The girls go back to school this week but I have to say I'm filled with trepidation for them. I feel that the time isn't right. They're excited to be starting back though so trying not to pass on my feelings of impending doom to them. The good thing about the book swap was that everything was free! My sister had a 'yard sale' last week from her front garden (safety measures were followed to the letter) and at the end, when she still had loads of books left, I remembered what you do with your spare books so we put them on her garden wall with a 'free' sign attached and it was amazing how quickly they disappeared! Our charity shops are still all mostly closed although we do have those book banks you can deposit excess books into but I'm not confident they don't end up in landfill so I don't use those. Thanks for popping in,Vix.xxx

  5. I think painting nails with a sweet little one sounds perfect. Good luck with the books. I am not a Harley fan but would love a walk on the beach with you!

    1. Thank you Meredith. Hope you had a good weekend. The nails are actually stick-on ones that the eldest GD has become addicted to. You can come and join me on the beach any day!!xxx

  6. How fabulous that field of poppies is, we don't get fields like that around here - usually yellow with mustard but never poppies. Nice to see you are getting out a little but also that the girlies are coming over - those falsies are impressive and a great match for the bag. I love to see little girls taking an interest in things like this, it's so sweet.

    1. Thanks pal. I love to see a 'sea' of poppies. I always remember my Mum told me that whenever you see them growing in a field like that, it means that no weedkiller or other nasties were used in the planting process so can only be a good thing. The girls go back to school this week, when C starts High School, for one day and A goes into Primary 2. They're beyond excited but I can't for the life of me see the reasoning in sending them back right now when there are new clusters springing up almost everyday. I'm beyond worried for them all.

  7. What lovely synchronicity with your poppies! It always feels very special when something like that happens, eh? Magical.
